Dr. Chandranath Bhattacharyya started his career in Forensic Science at Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Calcutta, under Bureau of Police Research & Development in 1980; and in 1982 he was posted as Ballistic Expert at CFSL, Chandigarh and served there in various positions from Scientific Assistant to Deputy Director. In October 2001, he has taken over as Director, CFSL, Hyderabad.
During his tenure in the Ballistic Division at CFSL, Chandigarh, examined a large number of firearm and explosion cases, including cases of national importance and deposed evidence in various Courts, including General Court Marshals. He is actively engaged in research work throughout his career and about 65 publications are to his credit, in various national and international reputed journals and presentations at various different national and international conferences.
His major contribution includes “Proposed Mathematical Model of Dispersion of Shot-Gun Pellets and Gun Shot Residue Particles, Evaluation of Trajectory parameters of low-velocity projectiles”, for which he was awarded Ph.D. Degree by the
Punjabi University . He has a vast experience in organizing many specialized courses in the field of Forensic Ballistics for the forensic experts in the country. He is the only Indian Scientist trained at Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Ottawa, Canada for Analysis of Gun-Shot Residue Particles, using SEM-EDXA. Utilizing the expertise attained at RCMP, he has also established the SEM-EDXA facility at CFSL, Hyderabad.
In recognition to his outstanding services in the field, he was felicitated with various awards, to name a few:
- Prestigious Union Home Minister’s Award for the year 2002
- Nominated for the prestigious title “ MAN OF THE YEAR 2000” by International Board of Research, American Bibliographical Institute, USA for overall accomplishments and contributions to the society.
- Offered Membership of ABI’s Research Board of Advisors from the Director, American Bibliographical Institute, USA
- Name included in the MILLENNIUM EDITION of the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership by the Editorial Board of ABI, USA ‘ because of exemplary performance’ in the field of Forensic Science.
He is holding membership in various high-level committees set-up by Central, State Governments, State Forensic Science Laboratories, Osmania University’s Board of Studies, Rai University’s Academic/Governing Council, Indian Science Congress Advisory Committee etc.
He is also External Examiner and Paper Setter for various Universities viz., Osmania University, Sagar University, Punjabi University, Dr. HS Gour Vishwavidyalaya etc.
